Practical tips - Ages 8-10

This section shares practical, real-world tips shaped by our experience and what I’ve learned since, putting safety and communication first.

I know how overwhelming the digital world can feel for parents, and I hope this helps bring clarity and confidence. This isn’t a one-off conversation, it’s an ongoing one that needs to be introduced, reinforced, and woven into everyday life.

Staying safe online

Staying safe online is about helping children understand how to make good choices, protect their information, and recognise when something doesn’t feel right.

This is a great video for starting these conversations.

Digital
footprints

A digital footprint is the trail of information you leave behind every time you go online. It's there forever. Explain that everything you do online leaves a trail, even things you think are deleted. Messages, photos, searches, and posts can be saved, shared, or seen later.

Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is when someone bullies online. If something someone says or sends makes you feel sad, scared, or uncomfortable, it’s important to tell me. If you ever see bullying happening to someone else, come to me or another trusted adult so we can help. You don’t have to deal with it alone.

Talk about Social Media early

Talk to children whilst they are still young about some of the risks of social media to educate them early. Explain some things on the internet are made for adults, not children, and can be confusing or upsetting. It gives you access to all sorts of adult material that we don't want you to access just yet, childhood is short, we want you to enjoy it.
